FAQs

General

+ Who is the Amulet intended for?

Our product is intended to help:

  • families to enjoy more of their time together (and apart) worry-free
  • individuals to enjoy meals prepared by others with ease
  • children to live a more inclusive childhood and maintain independence
  • businesses to better accommodate their patrons and guests

+ WHAT ALLERGENS Do YOU TEST FOR?

We’re currently detecting multiple major allergens and intolerances, including peanuts, soy, and gluten. We eventually plan to offer tests for the top nine most common food allergens (peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, eggs, milk, soy, and sesame) + gluten.

+ WHEN WILL NEW ALLERGENS BE AVAILABLE?

We will alert subscribers as new allergen samplers become available. So make sure you’re subscribed!

+ WILL I NEED A NEW AMULET FOR EACH ALLERGEN?

No way! The Amulet is a one-time purchase—the same unit can accommodate different allergen samplers.

+ WHAT TYPES OF FOODS DOES THE AMULET TEST?

It can test a wide variety of solids and liquids—from granola bars and cupcakes, to salads and soups.

This product has not been evaluated for testing pharmaceutical, cosmetic, or veterinary products. The Amulet has undergone extensive food testing but has not been evaluated for all possible food combinations, products, and processes.

+ ARE SAMPLERS REUSABLE OR DISPOSABLE?

Samplers are currently single-use. You’ll need a new sampler for each test.

We are working on rolling out a recycling program that allows customers to send back used samplers for us to repurpose certain components and reduce waste. We are also exploring new, eco-friendly designs based on biodegradable materials.

+ HOW DO I COLLECT A FOOD SAMPLE?

You can use a utensil or your hand—whatever you’re comfortable with.

+ HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO RUN A TEST?

You should receive a detection result within approximately 1 minute.

+ DO I NEED WIFI OF A SMARTPHONE FOR IT TO WORK?

The Amulet doesn’t require Wi-Fi or a smartphone to run a test. However, by using our app and sharing your test results, you’ll help us improve the user experience while also helping the food allergy community.

+ DOES THE SENSOR TEST THE ENTIRE DISH?

The Amulet only tests a sample of your food which may not be representative. The Amulet accordingly serves as a complement, not a substitute, to the precautionary measures you would normally take when managing your food allergy.

+ DO YOU HAVE A VIDEO DEMONSTRATING HOW THE AMULET WORKS?

Why yes, we do! Watch our product demo video here.

Technology

+ HOW DOES THE TECHNOLOGY WORK?

Our proprietary and patented sensors are made up of thin films that contain trillions of molecular nanocavities that match and bind to target allergenic molecules. When in contact with the allergenic ingredient, our sensor generates a unique electric signal, which alerts the user of the allergen’s presence.

+ WHAT LEVELS OF SENSIVITY DOES THE AMULET DETECT ALLERGENS?

Our sensors are calibrated to detect allergenic ingredients at levels lower than those known to trigger an allergic reaction in the most sensitive food-allergic individuals.1

  • SOY: Our soy sampler is calibrated to detect soy at 100 parts-per-million (ppm) or 10mg in 100g of food.*

NOTE: Due to the manufacturing process, refined soybean oil and soy lecithin are unlikely to produce a “Soy Detected” readout, as they generally contain very low levels of soy allergen, if any. The Amulet will only detect the presence of soy in these items if the amount of soy allergen exceeds 100ppm. Allergists typically consider soy lecithin and soybean oil safe to eat for individuals suffering from soy allergies.2, 3 However, we always recommend consulting with your allergist or clinician.

  • PEANUT: Our peanut sampler is calibrated to detect peanut at 10ppm (1mg/100g food).

  • GLUTEN: Our gluten sampler is calibrated to detect gluten at 20ppm (2mg/100g food). This threshold is consistent with FDA gluten-free labeling requirements.

*Allergy Amulet technology was validated following AOAC guidelines for allergen detection.4

+ ARE YOU DEVELOPING OTHER PRODUCTS?

Our commercial brand, Amulet Scientific, is developing a range of sensing technologies for the food, beverage, and agriculture industries. Other applications include food toxins, herbicides, and bacteria.
